Why visit Jozani Chwaka Bay

Zanzibar's only national park, home to the endemic red colobus monkey and pristine mangrove forests.

Ecosystem & vegetation

The park contains several distinct ecosystems: groundwater forest fed by underground freshwater springs, mangrove forest along Chwaka Bay, coral rag forest on raised limestone, and salt marsh grasslands. The mangrove ecosystem serves as a vital nursery for marine life and protects the coastline from erosion. The forest features mahogany trees, palm species, figs, and various tropical hardwoods in the groundwater forest. The coral rag areas support drought-resistant species, while the mangrove zones contain several mangrove species adapted to tidal conditions.
