Begin the Marangu Route ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain and the world's highest free-standing volcano. The first day's trek leads through a magical montane rainforest alive with birdsong, giant ferns, and endemic wildlife.
Morning
Drive from Arusha to Kilimanjaro National Park Marangu Gate (95km, approximately 2 hours). Complete registration, meet your mountain guide and porters, and receive a comprehensive pre-trek briefing. Begin trekking through the lush montane rainforest zone — the air thick with moisture and the canopy alive with bird calls.
Afternoon
Trek through the rainforest for approximately 5-6 hours, covering 8km. The well-maintained trail winds upward through a world of giant tree ferns, draped mosses, and twisted ancient trees. Spot blue monkeys swinging through the canopy and white-necked ravens calling overhead. Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) by mid-afternoon.
Evening
Hot meal served at the Mandara Hut dining room. Briefing on altitude acclimatization and tomorrow's route. Early rest in preparation for the days ahead. Optional short evening walk to the edge of the forest.
