The Lemosho Route is considered the most scenic path to Kilimanjaro's summit. Seven days through pristine rainforest, the Shira Plateau, the dramatic Barranco Wall, and finally the glaciated summit of Uhuru Peak.

The journey

overnightdrivemeals included

Begin your Kilimanjaro summit adventure on the remote and scenic Lemosho Route. Drive from Arusha to the Lemosho Gate at 2,100m, then trek through primeval rainforest alive with colobus monkeys and forest birds to reach Big Tree Camp — Mti Mkubwa — in a cathedral of ancient trees.

Morning
Early morning departure from Arusha, driving west past Moshi to the Londorossi Gate administrative checkpoint. Complete all registration and permit formalities. Transfer to Lemosho Gate (2,100m) to meet your mountain crew.
Afternoon
Begin trekking through dense rainforest on a well-maintained trail. The forest is lush and atmospheric, with giant Hagenia trees draped in old-man's-beard lichen, giant tree ferns, and wild impatiens flowering in the undergrowth. Climb steadily to Big Tree Camp at 2,780m.
Evening
Set up camp at Mti Mkubwa — Big Tree Camp — named for the enormous Hagenia tree at its centre. Hot camp dinner served by your mountain crew. First mountain briefing from your lead guide. Early to bed in preparation for the days ahead.
WildlifeBlack-and-white colobus monkey, blue monkey, white-necked raven, Hartlaub's turaco, silvery-cheeked hornbill, sunbird species, bushbuck, duiker
SceneryPrimeval rainforest canopy towering overhead, giant Hagenia and Podocarpus trees, moss-draped branches, glimpses of Kibo cone through breaks in the cloud, forest floor carpeted in wild flowers
The Lemosho Route starts from a remote gate with very few other trekkers — a far more peaceful start than the Marangu or Machame routes. The first day is a relatively gentle introduction; your porters carry all heavy equipment. Altitude sickness is unlikely at 2,780m but drink plenty of water.
