Begin your Kilimanjaro Machame Route ascent with a drive to the park gate and a magical first trek through the lush equatorial rainforest. The sounds and scents of the mountain envelope you as you climb to your first camp at 3,000 metres.
Mattina
Depart Arusha after an early breakfast. Drive to Machame Gate (95km, approximately 2.5 hours). Complete registration, meet your mountain crew, and check equipment. Begin trekking at approximately 10:00 AM through dense rainforest — giant heathers, hagenia trees draped in old-man's beard lichen, and the calls of endemic birds.
Pomeriggio
Steady climb through the montane rainforest zone. The trail gains elevation gently at first then steepens through the heath zone. Packed lunch eaten on the trail. Continue climbing through the heathland transition zone.
Sera
Arrive at Machame Camp (3,000m) in the early evening. Hot dinner prepared by your mountain chef. Briefing by your lead guide on the days ahead. Early to bed to begin acclimatisation.

The Machame Route is known as the 'Whiskey Route' for its steeper, more challenging profile — but the scenery is outstanding. Proper broken-in boots and trekking poles are essential from day one.
