What Should You Pack for a Tanzania Safari?

Por Enock Fabian · 20 de julho de 2026 · 6 min de leitura

A practical, guide-approved packing list for a Tanzania safari — what to wear, the colours to avoid, and the small things first-timers always forget.

You need far less than you think. Safari life is casual, laundry is usually available at lodges, and light-aircraft transfers limit your luggage anyway. The goal is comfort, neutral colours, and layers for cool mornings and warm afternoons.

Clothing — think neutral and layered

  • Neutral colours (khaki, olive, beige, brown) — they don't spook wildlife and hide dust.
  • Lightweight long-sleeve shirts and trousers for sun and mosquito protection.
  • A warm fleece or jacket — dawn game drives and the Ngorongoro highlands get cold.
  • A wide-brim hat, sunglasses, and a light rain layer in the green season.
  • Swimwear for lodge pools and Zanzibar.

Colours to avoid

Skip bright white (shows dust) and dark blue/black — those colours attract tsetse flies. Leave camouflage clothing at home; it's restricted in Tanzania as it's associated with the military.

Footwear

Comfortable closed walking shoes or light hiking boots for walks, plus sandals for camp. You rarely need heavy boots unless you're doing serious walking safaris.

Health & toiletries

  • High-SPF sunscreen, lip balm and insect repellent (with DEET).
  • Any personal medication, plus a small first-aid kit.
  • Malaria prophylaxis if your doctor advises it.
  • Hand sanitiser and wet wipes for dusty days.

Gear you'll be glad you brought

  • Binoculars — one pair per person transforms game viewing.
  • Camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries and memory cards.
  • A power bank and a universal adapter (Tanzania uses UK-style Type G plugs, 230V).
  • A soft duffel bag, not a hard suitcase — essential for light-aircraft weight and space limits (usually ~15 kg).

When we build your trip we send a tailored packing list based on your exact season, parks and style of travel — so you never over- or under-pack.

Perguntas frequentes

What colours should I avoid on safari?

Avoid bright white (shows dust), dark blue and black (attract tsetse flies), and camouflage (restricted in Tanzania). Stick to neutral khaki, olive and beige.

How much luggage can I bring?

For road trips you have flexibility, but light-aircraft transfers between parks usually cap luggage at around 15 kg in a soft bag. We confirm your exact allowance with your itinerary.

Do lodges offer laundry?

Most lodges and camps offer laundry, so you can pack light and re-wear. We'll note which properties on your trip include it.
