Good news first: you don't have to choose. They're close together on the northern circuit and most itineraries include both. But if you're weighing time and budget, here's how they differ.
The Serengeti — endless plains and the migration
Vast, open and iconic. The Serengeti is where you come for the Great Migration, big-cat drama and that feeling of endless wilderness. It rewards more time — two to four nights lets you follow the herds and explore different regions (south for calving, north for river crossings).
Ngorongoro Crater — the world's wildlife bowl
A collapsed volcanic caldera with an extraordinary density of animals on the crater floor. It's the best place in Tanzania to see the Big Five in a single day — including the rare black rhino. Because it's compact, a half or full day is often enough.
