Begin the legendary Machame Route, known as the Whiskey Route for its challenging and rewarding character. The trek opens with a dramatic passage through Kilimanjaro's dense montane rainforest, ascending steeply to Machame Camp at 3,000 metres as the great mountain reveals itself above the canopy.
Asubuhi
Early morning departure from Arusha. Drive to Machame Gate on the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro (95km, approximately 2 hours). Complete registration and equipment checks at the gate. Meet your team of experienced mountain guides and porters. Begin the trek through the dense rainforest zone at approximately 1,500m.
Mchana
Trek through the lush montane rainforest — giant tree ferns, moss-draped Podocarpus trees, and endemic Impatiens kilimanjari flowers carpet the slopes. Listen for black-and-white colobus monkeys crashing through the canopy and spot the endemic Kilimanjaro bird species. The track is steep and well-worn, climbing steadily through the forest.
Jioni
Arrive at Machame Camp (3,000m) in late afternoon. Porters will have camp set up and hot tea ready. Enjoy the first views of Shira Ridge glowing above the tree line. Hot dinner served in the mess tent. Acclimatisation briefing from the lead guide. First night on the mountain.

Machame Gate to Machame Camp is approximately 11km, taking 5–7 hours. The ascent is steep and the trail can be muddy — waterproof boots and gaiters are essential. Altitude sickness is rare at this stage but drink plenty of water.
