Early morning departure from Arusha. Enter Arusha National Park — a compact but extraordinarily diverse park at the foot of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest peak. Game drive through the Momela Lakes and Ngurdoto Crater lookout. Watch giraffe, zebra, warthog, buffalo, and black-and-white colobus monkeys against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Meru. Flamingos gather on the alkaline Momela Lakes.

Drive south to Tarangire National Park (2 hours). Afternoon game drive along the Tarangire River, where hundreds of elephants gather to drink and bathe. Watch elephant herds interact with young calves in the shallow water. The ancient baobab trees tower above the savanna as giraffe, zebra, and lion move through the golden afternoon light.

This opening day combines two very different parks — the compact drama of Arusha NP and the elephant-rich savanna of Tarangire. Total driving is approximately 3 hours. Arusha NP is often overlooked but offers spectacular scenery and reliable wildlife close to town.
